Pruning away negative thoughts
Weeds grow uninvited, much like negative thoughts. You don't have to cultivate them, they're just there.
One or two weeds might not be a problem, but if you ignore them, they can soon take over. Weeds come naturally. Similarly, it does take time and effort to control this default way of thinking.
We can't avoid weeds popping up, but we can control them. We can challenge negative thoughts and choose what we replace them with.
There are many types of weeds, we need to be able to recognise them to root them out. We can recognise our negative thoughts more effectively by learning about cognitive distortions. You can read about those here.
